Tips for Shy Avon Representatives
When I joined Avon, my biggest concern was the fact that I am shy. I am comfortable talking to people who approach me, however, I struggle, even to this day, going up to a perfect stranger & talking to them about my business.
Here are some tips that I use to grow my business as a shy Avon representative.
Wear the Products or Wear a Pin
One great way to get people to approach you is by wearing Avon products or a cheaper route, wear an Avon pin. You can find affordable pins at www.lovemybuttons.com.
Once someone compliments you on your Avon jewelry or fragrance you are wearing, you can reply with:
“Thank you! I’m an Avon representative & got these on sale for $5.99. If you like, I can give you a brochure & you can find all kinds of jewelry, like these. I have my contact info on the back but how about I get yours so I can follow up & see if there is anything you’d like before my next order goes in.”
I know you may be sitting there & saying oh yeah that sounds simple enough but then the what ifs start popping in your head. Hey I know, I’ve been there. I do the same thing when I hear a suggestion like this but I know for me, I am more at ease when someone approaches me because I know that this person is interested in my products because they just complimented me on one. I already got him or her hooked! So the hard part is done.
Hand Out Sample Packs or Goodie Bags
If you are looking for a way to approach people & be able to “reward” them for listening to you or to use as an “ice breaker”, sample packs or goodie bags are a great way to do this. You can create a large number of sample packs/goodie bags at an affordable cost by taking advantage of the sample bundles Avon offers in the What’s New & using snack bags or decorative treat bags from the dollar store.
How I Make My Sample Packs:
- 2-3 samples
- Recruiting Flyer
- Buy Avon Flyer
- Treat like a mint or some sort of hard candy.

A great way to let people in your neighborhood know you are an Avon representative without knocking on their door is tossing old brochures. Though this is not a guaranteed success all the time, this is a great way to let a large number of people know that there is an Avon Lady in their neighborhood & a great way to use old brochures.
You can also use tossing in neighborhoods outside of your own. For example, if you get a customer that is out of your normal range of business, tossing can help you get more customers in that area.
Do remember, that you still need to ensure your brochures look professional and that you respect your local law. Always keep in mind that you want to be respectful of people’s property when tossing. This is your first impression. What I personally do is not technically “toss”. During our daily walks with my 11 year old, 8 year old & baby, we will drop off brochures at the front door or porch. However, in neighborhoods that have newspaper boxes at the end of their driveway, I just pop a brochure in there. Usually those homes have long driveways & it would take hours to do a whole neighborhood. For me, this has been working in my area. I know other reps have found success with just literally tossing a brochure at the end of people’s driveways. Tossing is suppose to be a quick & simple way to reach a large number of people so figure out a way that works for you & are comfortable with doing.

- Information Flyer About Buying & Selling Avon (popular one I use is “Why is there an Avon Brochure at my Doorstep?“- Theresa Paul has a similar flyer on her team page files)

Find ways to Advertise Your Business Locally
This will probably be a more expensive option out of all of the tips listed here, but there are ways you can advertise in your local area rather cheap. This is the area where you need to pay attention to your surroundings & see how other local business are advertising.
- Pin flyers up in bulletin boards at your local grocery store, church or community center.
- Talk to your local convenience store owner or gas station manager & ask to tape a flyer up in their window.
- Contact your local restaurant who has local business ads on their place mats or a church that has local businesses ads in their church bulletins
- Ask your kids doctor or your own doctor’s office if you can leave few brochures in their waiting room (you can offer the staff in the office a discount as a way to say thank you)
- Advertise in your local newspaper, even if its a paper for just your town or city.
- Talk to your local hairstylist or manicurist & ask to post a flyer, leave brochures or even have a small display of products to sell. (offer them to keep a percentage of the profit for helping you out)
- Let people know where ever your car is that there is an Avon Lady there! Purchase an Avon car decal or use window markers to write “Buy or Sell Avon at ….” or even “Avon Lady Here”.
As you can see there are a variety of ways to advertise your business & have them contact you. I know for me, when someone approaches me with an interest, I know the hardest part is done, so I am able to talk to them with no anxiety or nervousness. They chose me & now it is my job to show them that they made the right choice!

Do Events or Have a Yard Sale
Doing events are a great way to showcase your business, earn on the spot money and grow your customer base & downline. You can also do the same thing with a yard sale. What’s great about this type of activity is that people will approach you. If they are not interested in Avon, they won’t go to your table or yard sale.
You don’t need to have a wide variety of products to sell if you are just starting out or don’t have the funds yet to invest. The most important tool you can have is your Avon brochure. Make sure to have plenty of brochures to hand out that are labeled with your contact info, have a recruiting flyer & any other flyer(s) you’d like to add. (If they are old, make sure to let them know that they need to contact you for a current brochure.)
It would be wise to have samples. Having samples is a great way to attract people to your table & it gives them an opportunity to try Avon products. You can use sample packs to hand out or use opened full size products & create a sampling section for people to try on the spot.
The best way to get leads & new customers at an event or yard sale is by having a free raffle & have people complete Survey Cards. They are basic forms that ask a few questions with their name, address & contact info. Its important to keep it short & simple because people are not going to want to sit there and fill out a form for 5 minutes. You can have the prize be a bundle of products you have on hand or you can purchase a product bundle in the What’s New. It does not have to be an extravagant prize where it costs you a lot of money.
Make sure to have information about the Avon opportunity so people can learn about it. With recruits having to sign up online, bring a tablet or even make sure to have your smartphone so you can offer a chance for them to sign up right on the spot. You can reward those who do with a free product or Try It Kit. (Try It Kits or Test Drive Kits contain a couple brochures, samples, order forms & information about being a New Representative).
One of the best ways to grow your business, especially if you are looking to have more of an online business, is by sharing it on social media. Now a days, so many people go online to do their shopping & what makes an online business so great is that you can have customers & team members across the country.
As an Avon representative, you can take advantage of Avon’s Social Media Center on youravon.com where you will find posts, images and videos you can share on multiple Social Media networks. When someone clicks on the post, they will be directly linked to your e-Store! Download the app & you can share your business on social media wherever you go.
When sharing your business on social media it is important to diversify your posts so you can show the variety of opportunities someone can have with Avon & it doesn’t get on people’s nerves seeing the same type of posts multiple times a day. Each day, it is recommended you share:
- Buying Avon: share information about your favorite Avon products, sales & promotional offers or even pictures of you wearing/using Avon.
- Selling Avon: share information about the Avon opportunity & incentives, celebrate when you reach your goals or earn an incentive, share pictures of how much fun you are having & how easy it is to incorporate your business into your daily life, let people see all the amazing opportunities you are able to take advantage of as an Avon representative.
- Personal Post: Talk about something that interests you, post a favorite quote or silly photo of yourself. Let people get to know you & see that you are not just an Avon representative

Ask For Referrals From Customers, Family & Friends
One of the easiest ways to grow your business is by asking for referrals. You can ask anyone, even if they are not interested in Avon, for referrals. Everyone knows someone who loves Avon or beauty products & everyone knows someone who is looking to earn extra money.
When I was starting my business, like most new representatives I shared with my friends & family. What helped me gain a good customer base in the beginning is the fact that I asked my friends & family to bring their Avon brochure to work or to share with people they know. Wanting to be supportive, they did. So don’t be afraid to ask because for the most part, people want to help, especially if you are a consistent, friendly representative.
This is a great way for new representatives to grow their customer base & sales and it’s my favorite program. Ask friends & family if they would be interested in helping you grow your business as an Avon Helper. As an Avon Helper, you will reward them with a discount on their order or a certain dollar amount of free products. All they have to do is these 3 things:
- Share the brochures you provide them to friends, coworkers and family.
- Collect the orders & payments
- Deliver the orders
Work with friends or other reps in your area
One great way to ease your mind & minimize your anxiety is by going out & prospecting with friends or other representatives in your area. I know for me, it’s much easier to be “brave” when you are with friends. You can have it be a fun time & that energy will be infectious when you talk to people. If you are a leader or have team members under you, this is a great way to not only help yourself, but them as well. Have sample packs or brochures to hand out. You can even offer a raffle for those who give you their contact info & each of you can pitch in for the prize or donate an item.
Start with “Hi” to Friendly People
As an Avon Representative, even if you are looking to have an online business, you will need to talk to people at some point. It is recommended to use the Power of 3 as a way to network & grow your business. The Power of 3 basically is setting a goal of talking to 3 new people about your business each day. This sounds simple enough, however, if you are like me who is (1.) too shy to just walk up to someone & talk to them about my business & (2.) lucky to get out of the house 1 day a week long enough to talk to 3 new people. What has helped me out the most, when I do go out, is this YouTube video I came across from Carla Lytle, a top Avon representative & leader.
What I love about this video is how she breaks down the way to talk to people in a nonchalant manner & are able to walk away not feeling like you failed or embarrassed yourself. As she said, even if you walk away & not being able to talk about your business, you at least opened the door so maybe next time you run into the person, it will be much easier to incorporate your business into the conversation. Who knows, maybe he or she can help you out with something.
These are tips that have helped me as a shy representative come out of my comfort zone & grow my business. Don’t feel like you have to do all of these at once. Even if you do one a week or one a campaign, as long as you are continually growing not only with your business but as a representative, you will reach your goals & be the successful representative you want to be.
